WebDav Filesystem Mount

You can create WebDAV mounts from the Linux command line. This is useful if you want to access Nextcloud the same way you would any other remote file system mount. The following example shows how to create a private mount and mount it automatically whenever you log in to your Linux computer.

  1. Once you install the WebDAV file system driver davfs2, you can mount WebDAV shares like any other remote file system. Install on Debian/Ubuntu using the following command.
bash
apt-get install davfs2
  1. To install on CentOS, Fedora, or openSUSE, use the following command.
bash
yum install davfs2
  1. Add yourself to the group davfs2:
bash
usermod -aG davfs2 <username>
  1. nextcloudThen create a mount point in your home directory and a directory .davfs2/ for your personal configuration files.
bash
mkdir ~/nextcloud
   mkdir ~/.davfs2
  1. Copy :/etc/davfs2/secrets~/.davfs2
bash
cp /etc/davfs2/secrets ~/.davfs2/secrets
  1. Set yourself as the owner and set permissions to read-write owner only.
bash
chown <linux_username>:<linux_username> ~/.davfs2/secrets
   chmod 600 ~/.davfs2/secrets
  1. Append your Nextcloud login credentials to the end of the file, using your Nextcloud server URL and Nextcloud username and password secrets.
bash
https://example.com/nextcloud/remote.php/dav/files/USERNAME/ <username> <password>
   # or
   $PathToMountPoint $USERNAME $PASSWORD
   for example
   /home/user/nextcloud john 1234
  1. Add the mount information to /etc/fstab:
bash
https://example.com/nextcloud/remote.php/dav/files/USERNAME/ /home/<linux_username>/nextcloud davfs user,rw,auto 0 0
  1. Then test that it mounts and authenticates by running the following command: If set up correctly, no root privileges are required.
bash
mount ~/nextcloud
  1. You can also unmount it like this:
bash
umount ~/nextcloud

Now, whenever you log in to your Linux system, your Nextcloud share will be automatically mounted via WebDAV in the directory ~/nextcloud. To mount it manually, change it to auto .noauto/etc/fstab
